RockyPoint:DestinationandGatewaytoSonora

Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) is located on the Sea of Cortéz, once described by John Steinbeck as "God's Aquarium". Far northwest within Sonora State, it is just 60 miles from the border of the United States, and little more than a three hour drive from either Phoenix or Tucson.

Rocky Point is one of the youngest cities in Sonora State. As recently as 1941, when Puerto Peñasco was declared a municipal precinct, less than 200 people lived there, mostly working as fishermen. While fishing and other commercial uses of the port continue to thrive, with over 330 sunny day per year, proximity to all of the southwestern United States, and a long-established American community, Rocky Point has experienced an explosion of vacation, second-home, and retirement building.

In 2007 the State of Sonora completed work on a substantial upgrade of Rocky Point's Municipal Airport, including a 1000' extention of the runway, fueling services, runway lights, and amenities such as automobile rental, snack shop, pilot room, F.B.O., expansive waiting room, private meeting rooms, and shops. These upgrades were the catalyst for the inauguration of commercial air service to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Hermosillo -- and points beyond -- by Aero Litoral (Aeromexico).

But this is only the beginning of a new era of accessibility for our community. Our new International Airport -- located just minutes southeast of town -- is nearing completion. This landmark facility will open Rocky Point to scheduled airline service from many locations in the United States and Canada. Further -- thanks to the tireless work of Sonoran Governor Eduardo Bours -- the northern portion of the long dreamed-of Coastal Highway linking Rocky Point to California by a far shorter thoroughfare is nearing completion. Designed as a scenic coastal route -- virtually all of which will have ocean views -- this mammoth and ambitious 375-mile road building project will ultimately extend from El Golfo (just south of San Luis and Yuma, Arizona) all the way to the southern tip of Sonora, and position Rocky Point as the unrivaled gateway to Sonora's unspoiled Gold Coast and all of Western Mexico.

Rocky Point has come of age, and today offers its homeowners and visitors numerous amenities including golf courses and spas, countless fresh seafood vendors, automobile, RV, and ATV rental, international banking, 24-hour ATM services, and a vibrant and diverse restaurant scene!
